Princess Elmira of Saxony: A Life of Devotion and Legacy (1930-2022)

The passing of Princess Elmira of Saxony on June 14th marks the end of an era for the royal family of Saxony. Born on December 25th, 1930, in Lodz, Poland, Elmira Carlen Henke was the daughter of a textile merchant, Emil Henke, and Lydia Müller. Her life was marked by her dedication to her husband, Prince Albert of Saxony, whom she married in 1980 at the Theatinerkirche in Munich in a morganatic union, meaning they did not have any children together. Princess Elmira was a constant support to her husband, Prince Albert, a renowned historian who wrote extensively on the history of the Kingdom of Saxony and its royal house. Her passing leaves a significant void in the lives of those who knew her and her husband, who passed away in 2012. Princess Elmira will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Alten Katholischen Friedhof in Dresden, a testament to the enduring legacy of their love and commitment to each other.

On 14 June, Princess Elmira of Saxony died in Munich. She was ninety-one years-old.

Born on 25 December 1930 at Lodz, Poland, Elmira Carlen Henke was the daughter of textile merchant Emil Henke (1886-1957) and Lydia Müller. 

On 12 April 1980 at the Theatinerkirche in Munich, Elmira wed Prince Albert of Saxony (1934-2012), the second son of Prince Friedrich Christian of Saxony, Margrave of Meißen, and his wife Princess Elisabeth Therese of Thurn and Taxis. Their marriage was morganatic; Albert and Elmira did not have any children. Elmira was a stalwart supporter of her husband Prince Albert, an accomplish historian who wrote several books on the history of the Kingdom of Saxony and its royal house. Elmira will be buried beside her husband at the Alten Katholischen Friedhof in Dresden.
